Dental Care Tips with Spacers for Braces On

If your dental expert has already installed the spacers for braces in your teeth, your dentist will normally recommend what foods to eat and what foods to avoid. This is important because food can sometimes cause problems with your spacers.  Food particles may get stuck on your spacers and some foods will cause the spacers to be dislodged. That is why it is important to heed the advice of your dentist to avoid facing problems while wearing your spacers.

Foods to Eat with Spacers On

With your spacers for braces on, you are normally advised to consume soft and general small food items. You don’t necessarily have to go on a diet consisting of noodles, rice, and pasta, but there are a lot of food items to choose from, such as the following:

  • Bread
  • Pizza
  • Cake
  • Pastries
  • Egg
  • Dairy products like cheese
  • Muffins
  • Soft-cooked chicken
  • Lean and soft meats
  • Corned Beef
  • Meat loaf
  • Meat balls
  • Chicken nuggets
  • Fish like tuna and salmon
  • Vegetable
  • French Fries
  • Fruits
  • Jellies
  • Baked foods
  • Salads
  • Coleslaw

Foods to Avoid

Fortunately, there are only three main types of foods that you must avoid if you are wearing spacers for braces. They are as follows:

Avoid HARD Foods

Hard foods must be avoided at all cost while wearing spacers for braces, and even if you are no longer wearing the spacers but already the bracers. Examples of hard foods to avoid are as follows:

  • Beef jerky
  • Corn chips
  • Pop corn
  • Nuts
  • hard candies
  • hard cookies
  • hard fruits
  • hard vegetables

Avoid LARGE Foods

Just like hard foods, you must also avoid eating over-sized foods because they can dislodge the spacers. However, you can still eat most foods under this category by slicing them into smaller pieces, ideally bite-size pieces. Examples of large foods are:

  • Large chunks of meat
  • Large-cut chicken
  • Bagels
  • Hard rolls
  • Large pork and beef steak

Avoid STICKY Foods

Sticky foods can cause damage to the spacers. These foods also promote buildup of bacteria on the spacers, causing more dental problems. Some foods can even cause the spacers to fall out. Many of the sticky foods can cause tooth decay as well. Examples of sticky foods that you must avoid are as follows:

Proper Use of Spacers for Braces

Having spacers for braces in your teeth will not cause as much discomfort with proper dental care and hygiene. In addition, do your best to follow the recommended diet if you are wearing spacers for braces.
